Skincare Routine

IMG_4697.JPG

My journey with skincare started many years ago when I was in middle school! I was #blessed to have pretty good skin, even as a teenager. I never really had many skincare concerns besides the occasional pimple that I would typically pop and try to ~poorly~ cover with cover up. All throughout high school and college I used Neutrogena grapefruit scrub, and then I would slather on lotion afterwards. I understood the importance of washing my face morning and night, but I didn’t really pay attention to what I was putting on my face and since I didn’t deal with too many issues I wasn’t aware of how many products were available for different types of skin.

When I turned 23 I started dealing with cystic acne. I’ll never forget I was in a friends wedding and the day before it a giant pimple starting popping up on my chin. It was painful and red, and I didn’t understand why I couldn’t just pop it and move on! Hello, hormones. Our bodies are ever changing and hormones can react to stress, food intake, & environmental factors. It was at this time that I started paying more attention to my skins reactions and what I could do to help control them.

A few months later I moved to California, and this is when I really started to take a look at the products I was putting on my skin. As a dietitian I was already paying attention to foods I was consuming, but did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Everything you are putting on your skin is getting absorbed right into your body. I started to become aware of all of the chemicals and toxic ingredients that are often found in skincare products. This is not to scare you, but I do suggest you do some research on the topic! I feel so lucky I had access to stores that offered clean beauty options, as well as advice for my skin concerns.

I slowly started switching over my skincare and makeup, and focusing on replacing it with products that are nontoxic! While the switch can seem intimidating, I recommend starting with one product at a time. Wait until you run out of something, don’t feel like you have to do this all at once. Clean beauty products can be just as effective and you’ll feel so good about applying them. One common misconception is that they are too pricey. If you are already shopping at places like Sephora or Ulta the prices are going to be very similar. Just as it is in those stores, there are some products on the higher end that I do feel are worth my investment for my skin health.

My favorite shop to load up on all the goods is Shop Good in San Diego. In fact I love it so much, I recently started working there! That said, I was a loyal customer for about 2 years before joining the team. I would go there for all of my skincare needs, including receiving organic facials. Even before I joined the gang, they were all always so accommodating, genuine, and eager to answer any questions I had. It felt like home to me, and it truly has become a passion of mine to help others in this area as well. That said - read below for my current skincare regimen, as well as for some fun add ons! Keep in mind, I have normal to dry skin, and I experience hormonal cystic breakouts every month around that certain time! These are the products that I have been using for a couple of months now and I find they really help my skin GLOW!

Morning:

My morning skincare routine is so important to me. I don’t really feel my day has begun until I freshen up and clean my face. I used to use the same face wash at morning and night, but I learned that using the same one that strips away my makeup at night isn’t really necessary in the mornings as well! Anyways, we’ll get in to the deets below - I’ll tell you why I use & love each product!

Face Wash

Living Libations Seabuckthorn Best Skin Ever is my go to wash in the mornings. When I first heard of oil cleansing I was a bit skeptical. I didn’t understand how it would clean my skin; if it doesn’t foam was it actually working?!? The answer is YES it is. This soothing cleanser has powerful ingredients that get deep into the skin to calm it and offer hydration. Seabuckthorn has antioxidants and vitamins that keep skin fresh and smooth while fighting bacteria. I love the scent of this cleanser, and it feels so nourishing to massage it into my face each morning. My ritual is 1-2 pumps, massage it into my face for about a minute, and then get a hot wash cloth and dab my face. Technically this is moisturizer as well so you could just use this in the morning if you prefer, but I like to continue on with my routine!

Toner

I didn’t start using a toner until a couple of years ago & now it’s an absolute must for me. In the mornings I love Botnia Toner. When I use this one, I spray it on a cotton ball and wipe my face after I wash it. It offers that little extra bit of cleaning that I need to feel refreshed. It has a mix of arnica, goldenseal, and witch-hazel which all work to fight off any lingering bacteria after washing. It also soothes the skin and offers hydration! The scent is super refreshing as well.

Serum

My go to daytime serum is the Josh Rosebrook Active Infusion serum. It’s full of fatty oils that help brighten the skin, but it also has ingredients like licorice and cinnamon as well that fight free radicals. It goes on smooth and blends right in, offering your skin a glowy complexion for the day ahead!

Lotion

The last step in my morning skincare routine is my lotion! I never ever ever skip moisturizer. For daytime I like to use Osea Blemish Balm. I always say it feels like you are giving yourself a facial at home when you apply this moisturizer. It’s light, feels soo good to rub into your skin, and has a refreshing scent of essential oils. I can’t go without this!

Night:

My nighttime routine looks a little different than my morning routine! At the end of a day I am usually taking off makeup and I want to offer nourishment to my skin after it faces a day of elements. I use these products to revitalize and repair!

Face Wash

At night I use Tata Harper Purifying Cleanser. I will absolutely NEVER be able to use a different cleanser now that I’ve used this one. It goes on as a gel/oil, and then you add some water to give it a creamy texture. It’s a gentle detox that you can use daily to fight impurities and signs of aging. The delicious smell is just a bonus to this cleanser!

Toner

After cleansing I like to mist my face with the Living Libations Frankincense Face Tonic. It adds moisture and revitalizes my skin!

Carrot seed.jpg

Serum

Next step is Berlin Skin Carrot Seed Serum. This serum is crafted to fight scarring (Vit C), brighten the skin, and protect + heal. This one is a bit thicker which I love for nighttime. It’s so nice to rub into my skin and feel the properties going to work!

vital balm.jpg

Lotion

Obviously we aren’t skipping moisturizer at night. Josh Rosebrook Vital Balm is a super nourishing lotion that I love to use at the end of the day. It plumps the skin and protects it to prevent aging. It’s a rich whipped lotion that feels so soothing!

Oil

The last step in my nighttime routine is a facial oil to seal in all the goodness! I just started using a facial oil at night about a month ago and I’ll never go back. This one in particular is infused with botanicals that protect the skin and regenerates skin cells.

Fun add ons:

Okay, let’s be real - the most fun part of skincare is all of the add ons! Incorporating different masks, eye gels, trying new amazing products - it’s what keeps me excited about skincare and taking the time to nurture it! Below are some products I like to incorporate every once in a while!

linne.jpeg

Linne Refresh Mineral Mist

They nailed it with the name of this product because this is seriously the most refreshing mist I could ever dream up. The color in the glass bottle is beautiful and it works to protect cells as well as fight off bacteria. This is perfect to use anytime throughout the day because it is so light. You can spray it on over makeup no problem! I personally like to travel with it in my carry on and use it before, during, and after long flights!

botniaflower.png

Botnia Flower Powder Mask

I looooove a good facemask, and not just because they are fun to apply! They can reap some really powerful benefits. This flower powder one from Botnia is full of anti-inflammatory properties as well as soothing ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and chamomile flowers. I personally like to mix 1 part powder with 1 part goat milk yogurt, but you can also mix it with honey or water! Depending on your skin type the instructions on the jar will lead you in the right direction. While you’re at it, if you are going to be applying masks you might as well get this mask brush to get the full experience when applying them! Full on spa night at home!

guasha.png

Gua Sha Tool

Facial Gua Sha is known to detoxify the skin and increase elasticity. It feels like a nice little massage and gets your lymphatic system flowing in your face and neck. This is great to do at night after you’ve applied a facial oil! You don’t want to use this tool on dry skin.

mossmornings.png

Moss Mornings Sleep Peel

This peel is seriously amazingggg. I will warn, if you have sensitive skin I would be cautious using it, and avoid sun exposure the next day. That said - this peel works wonders! It’s a mix of 4 different acids that work to fight blackheads, brighten the skin, and smooth it out all while adding moisture. When I use this peel I just do my face wash and toner at night and then apply the Moss Mornings pad to my face. The next morning I rinse my face with a warm wash cloth and spray some refresh mist. It leaves my skin sooo glowy!!!

eyegels.jpg

H. Hazel Eye Gels

These eye gels are so fun! They help to reduce puffiness as well as reduce dark circles under the eyes. They firm fine lines and add moisture as well! One of my favorite products to pack on a red-eye flight!

Kosasport Lipfuel

We can’t forget about taking care of our lips! This is my favorite lip balm that I pack everywhere I go! It’s got hyaluronic acid to offer hydration and other vitamins that soothe the lips. It’s a sleek little container that I can easily convince my fiance to use too! (Okay, it’s actually pretty easy to convince him to use all of these items..)

Okay guys, I hope you enjoyed this in depth guide to my skincare routine! If you have any questions or comments I would love for you to reach out! These are all products I truly use each day and have seen results with them. I wouldn’t share if I didn’t absolutely love each one!
