Books to Read during Downtime

As much as I would like to say that normal life will resume soon, I think it’s safe to say that at least for the next couple of weeks we will be quarantined. I have so many mixed emotions running through my mind right now, as I’m sure we all do. I don’t know the answer, but I do know I am going to do my part to help in anyway I can and if that means staying home, so be it. We’ve already been choosing to stay home before the governor of California officially asked all residents to do so because I really believe it is our responsibility to keep not only our health but also the safety of others in mind as well. That said, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite books that I have recently read, and some that I plan on reading! I’ve categorized them by leisure and learning. As much as I love a good book that I can highlight, take notes, and learn all the things – I’m also really enjoying diving into some fiction books right now as well and letting my mind wander. We could all use some uplifting tools right now, and books are definitely in my toolbox. I hope you enjoy this list of books I’ve compiled for you!

Leisure

The Light We Lost

If you love a good love story, please read this book. It’s not your typical story, and with each page you will become more intrigued with these characters and their emotions. It’s a page turner and I honestly feel like now is such a great time to pick up this book. Based on 9/11 happenings, I feel that is the last time I country and world felt something as devastating as what we are going through now. Really can’t recommend this one enough!

The Silent Patient

Now THIS is a page turner. Once you start reading this book it is honestly hard to put it down. I promise the twists and turns in this book will keep you on your toes and wanting to keep reading for more. Let’s just say, I sat by the pool last summer reading this book and I got a major sunburn because I didn’t even realize how much time had passed! My, what simpler times.

Behind Closed Doors

As suspenseful as it is surprising, this book did not disappoint. You quickly dive into an unknown life and will find yourself holding your breath and gasping as you turn the pages. Okay, maybe that’s just me. But, what can I say?! I get REALLY into books and this one was so shocking.

Where the Crawdads Sing

A love story and a murder mystery? I’m in. This book is a testament that love can come in all shapes, sizes, and forms in regards to families and romances. This is a tale of true resiliency and the ending will leave you wanting more. Can’t recommend this one enough!

Learning

Body Love by Kelly Leveque

If you don’t know her already, Be Well by Kelly, is a celebrity nutritionist and is well known for her “Fab 4” smoothie formulation. What I respect the most about Kelly is her knowledge in the field and her science backed claims. She is truly a thought leader in the wellness industry and has her clients health in heart at all times. This book will walk you through her thought process when working with clients and she also shares some fun, yummy recipes. She has recently come out with a new book, Body Love Everyday, and has a podcast on iTunes as well.

The Mind-Gut Connection by Emeran Mayer, MD

It’s no secret that there is a relationship between the mind and the gut. It’s easy to say take a probiotic everyday to help keep your gut health in check, but what is the science behind it and how does this affect our full body? This book dives into all of the answers you are looking for!

inflammation.jpg

The Inflammation Spectrum by Dr. Will Cole

Inflammation can wreak havoc on the body. It can be caused by food choices, stress, exercise, and other factors as well. There is a difference between acute inflammation and chronic inflammation and the effects that they have on our body. Dr. Will Cole dives into solutions as well as offers daily affirmations to help you feel your best.

beyond the pill.jpg

Beyond the Pill by Dr. Jolene Brighten

This is one I have yet to read, but I can’t wait to get my hands on it! Dr. Jolene Brighten is a hormonal expert and offers her knowledge as well as advice for those who are transitioning from being on birth control. Many of us are unaware of the side effects that can come with this transition and it can feel isolating to go through. If her book is anything like her Instagram page, I know Dr. Jolene assures you you are not alone and provides education to help you get through the time.

Food Fix by Dr. Mark Hyman

Another one that I haven't gotten my hands on yet, but I am so interested in reading! Dr. Mark Hyman is a huge voice in the wellness industry and I would love to hear his thoughts on our food system and how it not only affects our health but also the environment. I have a feeling this one will be thought provoking and eye opening.
