Apple Dumplings

Fall has flung!!! Honestly the weather has felt incredible this week. I’ve been bracing myself for a warm October because frankly the past two have been hot. I remember going to the pumpkin patch in late October the past couple of years and sweating while wearing a tank top. I’m glad that the temps have been more mild this year! It’s definitely putting me in the fall spirit and inspiring all of the fall flavors…hence these delicious apple dumplings. My husband loves apple desserts, but I honestly don’t make them too often! Now that I made these dumplings and know how easy they are to make/how delicious they taste I think we’ll be having apple dessert a little more around here.

Apple dumplings are really simple! You only need a few ingredients that you honestly might already have at home. You start by chopping up some honey crisp apples and mixing them with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Next, you cut puff pastry sheets into squares. You’ll place the squares in a muffin tin (I recommend using a silicone muffin tray to prevent sticking) and fill them with the apples. Take the corners of the puff pastry and pull them together, gently press together making it look like a little dumpling. Finally, you will melt some butter and brown sugar together and brush the top of each apple dumpling. Pop those babies in the oven and in no time your home will smell incredible and you will be biting into a decadent fall treat!

I (of course) like to serve mine while they are still warm with vanilla ice cream. If you can’t serve these immediately you can pop them back in the oven at a low temp for just a few minutes to heat them up. I would recommend this over microwaving them to prevent them from getting soggy. We had friends over the evening I made these and they were a huge hit! It feels like you went to a local bakery and picked up some fresh pastries, but you can brag that you made them on your own! Enough rambling… let’s get to the recipe. I hope you enjoy these as much as we did!

Apple Dumplings

Apple dumplings are a classic for the fall! Honey crisp apples are chopped up and mixed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. You'll place this filling in puff pastry squares and then bake to make a flakey decadent little dessert. These are best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Ingredients

Filling
  • 2 large honey crisp apples
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
Dumpling
  • 2 puff pastry sheets
  • 3 tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Set puff pastry sheets out on the counter to thaw at room temp for about 30 minutes.
  3. Cut the honey crisp apples into small cubes. Place in a bowl and add brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well until the apples are coated evenly.
  4. Gently roll out puff pastry sheets on a floured surface and use a pizza cutter to cut each sheet into 9 squares, for a total of 18 squares. Place squares in muffin tin*, lightly pressing down the center.
  5. Fill each tin with about 1 tbsp. of the apple filling. Bring together the corners of each puff pastry square and gently press the dough together, making it look like a little dumpling.
  6. Melt the butter and mix the brown sugar into the butter after it's melted. Lightly brush the top of each dumpling with the butter mixture.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, enjoy!

Notes

*Note: I recommend using a silicone muffin pan for this recipe. If you use tin, make sure it is greased very well to avoid the puff pastry sticking to the pan.
